All these spectators just watching this go down, like the police solving a case real time, a weirdly smart little kid, and a girl probably getting murdered and they're just watching. Sonoko! from my research... Twenty years ago, when Midori was 18 years old, a serial hit-and-runner was stalking the streets that's when she first met Megure (eps 217,218 canonically plot-timeline not real Earth Years). that would make her 38 yes. but! BUT! the ONLY data on Megure's age at 41 i can find is from Movie 25 'The Bride of Halloween'... which i haven't seen yet... additionally, everybody knows the data/stories from the Conan movies are almost NEVER canonical. if you're curious those two anime episodes (217, 218) are sourced from Volume 28: File 11 (ch284) ~ Volume 29: File 2 (ch286).

since Megure is shown as a detective in those episodes... even a junior one... and no police officer in Japan makes detective (easily) without a minimum of 5 years experience in uniform, we'll have to go further backwards. the minimal age to take the initial police exam in Tokyo is 18 and you have to possess a high school diploma. then there are 12 months MINIMUM at their Academy... unless Megure went to college... and since he acts like no law enforcement/criminal justice college degree graduate i've ever met... myself included... he would not have bypassed that 12 months in the academy for the 6 month course. so his first year on the street in uniform would have been at 19. add the minimum 5 years and he's 24 when he meets his wife, maybe 25, add 20 years and that makes him 45 not 41. now, if he spent a few extra years in uniform till he passed his detective's exam? that could EASILY make him a DECADE older than Midori when they first met. :)

here's another comparison problem. Kogoro.

Ran's age, Shin's age, and Kogoro's age as a uniform cop then FAILING the detectives exam three times... and in the Tokyo Metro system you can only take that exam once every. year... it doesn't gel with Megure's seniority and rank and MY personal calculations on Megure and Kogoro's ages. according to Volume 78 3.1.1 File 818 - Mystery Train ("All Aboard!") Kogoro is 38 years old. Around the time Kogoro left the police force, Eri also moved out, though they have never officially divorced despite ten years passing... if Ran and Shin are both 16 (2nd years in HS) that makes he and Ran 6 years old when her parents split and Kogoro left the police force. but! but! Kogoro did attend college! his graduation is not specifically mentioned, although he is asked to give a graduation commencement speech at his alma mater as an alumni... so his degree is speciously confirmed by a second-hand source. so Kogoro could have taken the 6-month course at the Tokyo Police Academy unlike (my guess!) Megure. 18 years old entering the uniform division, then add five years for Kogoro's uniform time, add in ONE YEAR on the arson squad, 3 years to pass the detective's exam, annnd Kogoro is 26 or 27 when he joins Megure at Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One. before Kogoro turns 28... he quits police work. kinda works riiiiight? buuuut! the backstory episodes of Ran and Shin first meeting in kindergarten? Kogoro is ALREADY out of the uniform division and working in plain clothes, as shown on-screen. now, if these anime eps are non-canon... i didn't look that up. but i'm pretty certain they are manga canon. so, at the age of 5 when Ran and Shin first meet... Kogoro's already working (maybe!) in the arson division?

if Aoyama-sensei can't keep those details straight in the manga about Kogoro? how can he keep Megure and Midori's stories straight? :) that's the problem with drawing/writing a manga since the 1990's... huge. gaps. in. continuity. :D

nope. you're off by over a year. episode 173 aired December 20, 1999. Jan 1, 2020 was the start of the 21st century. ep 218 aired December 18, 2000. centuries are counted by their 10 decades, and the 1990's ended at midnight on New Year's Eve.
